Shimada-juku Oigawa Kawagoe Ruins

A long time ago, for the defense of Edo and Sunpu, bridging to the Oi River and ferryboats were prohibited, and Kawagoe was used to cross the river using horses and human feet. For this reason, the Oi River was considered to be one of the most difficult places on the Tokaido, and it was said that "Hakone Hachiri can be passed by horses, but not by horses."
It is now a nationally designated historic site and retains the townscape of that time.

In the 2nd year of the Meiji Era, the former Tokugawa Bakushin, who had been escorting Yoshinobu Tokugawa , will be involved in the reclamation of the Makinohara Plateau as a servant of the Kanayahara reclamation. In the 12th year of the Meiji era, the Horai Bridge was built to connect Makinohara Tea Garden and Shimada-shuku. The name of Horai was given when the Tokugawas visited.
